Since 1967, the Lord and Burnham designed Thunder Bay Centennial Botanical Conservatory has housed - and continues to house - a huge variety of tropical plants and cacti, including a rare cactus collection that boasts 150 species.

The Centennial Botanical Conservatory is set for a major overhaul next year, after city council approved millions in spending and a tentative plan to transform the area surrounding the facility with new plantings, pathways, and water features.

Council’s unanimous vote of approval on Monday sets the stage for construction to begin in the spring of 2024, after a false start this year.

THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay’s botanical conservatory is reopening to the public, as the city pushes back a major renovation of the facility that staff now say won’t take place until next year.

Parks manager Cory Halvorsen said despite a “strong push” to get the work done, staff concluded significant supply chain challenges raised the risk materials wouldn’t arrive in time to complete it by the end of August.

​City officials say the Centennial Botanical Conservatory is likely to be closed through the next year if council approves the next phase of its renovation project.

The city on Friday issued a news release, which said the facility will be closed after Jan. 1 to temporarily relocate the plants. That closure is expected to extend through 2023.

Opened in 1967, the Conservatory features exotic flowers, trees, shrubs and plants from around the world, and is a popular local attraction for schools, seniors, cultural groups, and wedding parties. The 50-year old facility is in need of structural repairs and FedNor’s funding will help with renovations, as well the widening of pathways to accommodate people with disabilities or mobility challenges.

The place to check out this summer is the Thunder Bay Botanical Conservatory. From a new children’s garden and honey bee farm to the pollinator beds and horticultural gardens, there’s something to see both inside and out. New summer hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
